Canker sore is a type of painful sore which causes ulcers in the mouth due to the formation of lesions. They are also called aphthous ulcers. About 20-40% of the population has suffered from canker sore at some stages of their life. Generally this illness does not require any treatment and they disappear on its own. The disease is more prevalent in younger adults and adolescent due to their health habits. Canker sores are different from common cold sores which develop on the outer lip in the form of blisters.
Hereditary and other environmental factors may cause canker sores in children. In case of oral trauma or injury to the oral cavity the person may get this disease. Smokers and chewers are more prone to develop ulcers in the mouth than normal individuals. Anxiety and stress may account for canker sores. In some cases food allergies and anti inflammatory medications may produce ulcers in mouth.
The individuals who are affected with Crohn disease (bowel disease) and ulcer in colitis area are likely to get canker sores in mouth. The development of ulcers in the mouth is an indication for any other bowel disease.
The ulcerous cells may develop in the mouth in any form. Oval shaped lesions measuring about 8-10mm in length are seen inside the oral cavity. It becomes difficult for the person to swallow anything. Normally it occurs for about 3-6 weeks and will clear up on its own without any treatment. Major type of canker sores may be painful when it develops into big sized ulcers.
Maintaining good hygiene is the best remedy for canker sores. Rinse the mouth with salt water will help in reducing the ulcerous cells. Several home remedies are available for curing canker sores without going to doctor. However if the symptoms are severe and painful, it is better to consult your doctor without delay. Silver nitrate is the prescribed medication for treating the ulcer. The painful ulcers will reduce its vigor and on applying silver nitrate powder and the canker sores may disappear in about 3 days.
In severe cases, your doctor may prescribe Tetracycline suspensions, Amlexanox, and Tramcinolone for application. However for preventing remission of the disease it is necessary to maintain good hygiene on mouth cavity.
