Cold sores are common blisters that appear on the mouth and lips. Sometimes the sores can inflict pain on the individual and it will last only for few days. You can see small fluid like blisters developing on the surface of lips and even inside mouth.
The virus herpes simplex causes cold sores and two different kinds of herpes simplex are recognized. Cold sores are caused by Type 1 virus and are contagious. When an affected person kisses another the virus is transmitted from one person to another. Even it can spread through the saliva of the infected person. Cold sores spread more frequently at the stage of blister formation than at the time of shedding of dried blisters. The risk of spreading is reduced when the blister gets dried up. But this does not hold good always. In some cases the saliva contains the herpes simplex virus of the affected person even after the sores are completely cured. However the disease will not spread through contaminated towels or surfaces.
The person develops a stage called ‘prodrome’ which is typically the stage at which the first cold sores begin to appear. It will produce a burning sensation on the person after a day or two. The affected part such as lips or nose may become reddish and swollen. Due to the formation of fluid like blisters it may cause pain in the area. In some cases multiple small blisters will come together to form one big blister. Cold sores are recurrent in nature.
