Conjunctivitis is a condition of inflammation of mucous membrane of the eyes and eyelids. It is the most common disease which may affect any one who is healthy otherwise. Since it is highly contagious the affected person should not mingle with others and should keep himself isolated till the inflammation gets cured up fully.
When the eyes are exposed to dust and smoke there is chance for getting irritated. Sometimes if the eyes are exposed to hot sun rays for prolonged period can cause conjunctivitis. Over straining of eyes and exposure to gas and chemicals can induce inflammation on the eyelids. Even lightning and steam exposure can cause this disease.
Major symptoms of conjunctivitis include swelling of eyes and red coloration. The eyelids may swell profusely causing sticking sensation. The eyes become so irritated that the person will feel like sand is deposited in his eyes. The eyes become reddish with discharge of water. The eyes may become sensitive to light. In rare cases there may be mild pain in the eyes. If left untreated for long time, the eyes may develop pus inside but it will not affect the vision.
Self remedy :
Always keep the eyes clean and wash them with cold water. Stay protected from sunlight, dust and smoke. Avoid going to the situations in which there is extreme cold or heat condition. Take enough rest and do not strain the eyes by over-reading. Do not touch the eyes even if you feel irritated. Use clean moist cloth to remove the infection from the eyes.
It does not require any specialized treatment since the conjunctivitis will disappear usually after 2-3 days. After consulting your doctor, apply antibiotic medication in the form of eye drops for removing allergic bacteria. Mild eye drops is enough for treating pink eye. Apply 4-5 drops into the eyes for 3 times a day. Always follow clean habits for protecting your eyes.
