In some infants there may be patchy or scaly cells which develop on their head, which is known as cradle cap. It is called by several names like honeycomb disease, milk crust and crusta lactea etc. You can observe small yellow colored patches like rashes on the scalp of the new born baby. Though it does not cause irritation to the baby still it looks ugly on the head of the infant. The onset of cradle cap is during the first 3 months of infancy. The rashes are more in number near the ear, and eyelids. In adults if you have similar symptoms it may be due to dandruff. Cradle cap is quite common in infants and statistics suggests that about almost one-half of the new born babies will have this symptom.
The common cause for the formation of patches in the scalp is due to fungal infection. Even some antibiotics taken by the mother can cause rash formation in the head of the baby. In some cases the new born child is given antibiotics which causes allergy on the scalp or skin of the child. It is quite common for a new born baby to get infected with fungus in the scalp and in the diaper area. The fungus can cause infection on the skin of the baby causing diaper rash and on his ear causing ear infection. Inadequate quantity of biotin can also cause cradle cap in infants. Sometimes, the infants get excess of sebaceous gland secretion which may cause this problem.
The infant will have scaly patches on his head and other parts of the body. If the rash worsen and does not subside in 2-3 days then you can consult the doctor. In some cases the rashes becomes red and cause irritation to the baby and it may spread to other parts like ear and skin.
Cradle cap will settle on its own and does not require any kind of treatment. However if the problem does not solve for more than 4 days you can consult pediatrician. Gentle washing of head will remove the yellowish patches in case the infection is caused by fungus.
Medications like antibiotics and topical ointments are given to control severe case of cradle cap. Miconozal nitrate and clotrim are prescribed for controlling fungal infection. If it does not go normally the fungal infection may give rise to bacteria causing impetigo and serious rash formation.
