Discoid Lupus Erhtyematosus is a type of chronic skin disease causing inflammation and sores on the face, ears and scalp region. Sometimes lesions or bumps may develop as red patches with hard scales. If you observe the patches closely, you can find the corner of the circle is dark red in color and the inner area is somewhat light red in color. Lupus is a condition associated with impairment of autoimmune mechanism and hence the body has poor or reduced resistance to fight back bacteria and fungus. In severe cases the lupus can affect the internal organs like heart, kidneys and nervous system and this condition is known as Systemic Lupus Erhtyematosus (SLE).
Rashes are seen on the neck, face and scalp area of the affected individuals. These rashes are marked red in color and can cause irritation. Sometimes the rashes become hard and it may look as if the skin is exposed to sunrays seriously. The rashes are normally oval shaped or round shaped. When it forms in the scalp the patient will suffer serious hair loss. In some cases the rashes are seen in tongue and other areas of mouth. It may or may not produce pain depending upon the severity of the inflammation of the skin.
DLE occurs due to reduced functions of the autoimmune system of the person. When the immunity is affected, it may give rise to formation of rashes and in rare cases it may affect the internal organs of the person causing serious consequences.
The affected person should take enough precautions while travelling in the hot sun. He should wear sunglasses and use sunscreen lotions for protecting the skin. Medical treatment comes in the form of topical ointments and creams containing corticosteroids to control the infection. The cream and lotion helps to control the swelling and spread of infection in the surrounding areas. Generally the rashes formed because of DLE takes time to heal.
